Working Within 3D Environments

Working in 3D environments has changed my perspective as a designer profoundly. As a sculptor, painter and illustrator my parameters are defined by the limitations of the materials I’m working with however, within a 3D environment, all bets are off. Texture and model modifications such as scalability and transparency have a big impact on impression and making a powerful presentation is everything. The best way to describe the removal of limitations in my opinion is illustrated in this clip from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. World building is truly immersive work and an unparalleled creative outlet.


Virtual Collaboration

When it comes to collaboration there are so many tools both free and subscription based that bring digital artists together. I’ve found that using Autodesk Fusion 360 is what works for me. It’s extremely easy to share instantly via multiple platforms since a share button is built in. With the URL that is shared there is a viewer for 3D models that utilized the view cube along with several tools to make notes and even changes to the project. Another great feature is that each mesh has a history which also shows who changed what on the project. A really great resource I found but do not have a subscription to is 3D artist magazine. I put in a request with the Peninsula College library to subscribe to this magazine as I think it would be inspiring and education for students. Unity and Unreal both appear to be great collaborative tools for 3D artists and designers and I look forward to learning more about how they work. When it comes to staying sane while working from home, I have no issue with it. I love working from home and when I feel like I need a break from my desk I go out and take photos, paint or sculpt.


Uncanny Valley

Uncanny Valley is the term for an acceptance curb of a machine with human like qualities either through virtual reality, robotics or a variety of other technologies. Rejection of these human like machines is often based on fear. Fear of machines is a human survival instinct. People naturally fear what they don’t understand.  The uncanny valley phenomenon get’s particularly frightening when there is an added AI component. Design tends to mimic nature, it’s just a fact of life as is fear. Science fiction is a large part of why people get so uneasy around the artificial imitation of their image. Never the less, there are generally two schools of thought on the subject; machines will serve humanity or machines will destroy humanity. I tend to be a realistic optimist so to highlight a positive example of a widely accepted form of machines resembling people I’d like to point out that Amazon, Apple and google have found a way to interact with their customers without getting too creepy for the most part by communicating with their customers using a female human voice.

I’m introducing a new character along the hero’s path. The hummingbird is a symbol of infinity which I believe is very fitting for the last step of the Hero’s Journey. Step 12 “Return with the Elixir” hero’s  will encounter Herman the Hummingbird who offers them a bit if parting knowledge before they cross the bridge at the end.
